3 0 S U P E R - N A N A S « Wonder Women » – a natural choice of theme since Jeanne Augier, the Negresco’s free-spirited owner, has all her life defended women’s rights. From the late 19th century through the irst half of the 20th these progressed painfully slowly, then from the Fifties the women’semancipation movement started to gain speed  : authorisation to open an own-name bank account (1965), Neuwirth Law legalising contraception (1967), equal pay for men and women (1972), political parity (2000), parity on corporate boards (2008). Progressindeed, but which only underlines the inferior role our so-called modern society accorded them. For more than 40 years now, feminist and activist voices have been loudly denouncing a condition still both unjust and intolerable. From Pussy Riot’s Russian feminist punk rockers staging art performances advocating women’s rights to Femen’s bare-breasted activists, the sex some would prefer to continue seeing as weak is making its voice heard and standing its ground in public against sexists of all types. Yes, women are still battling to make their place more comfortable, in everyield. They distinguish themselves in sport – think Emilie Andéol and Estelle Mossely winning gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and French hearts. Artistic women are now newsworthy, as in the recent inlux of female writers onto the literary scene, the increasing number of women ilm directors – playing the star for the camera is no longer enough, they want to be behind it – and a promising generation of talented young female visual artists. But do all these « wonder women » mean everything is hunky dory ? Unfortunately not. An International Labour Organization report published in 2016 concluded that women are still contending with generalised inequality. So when do we get real girl power ?
