Back in the Fifties, Antti Lovag built his Bubble House, César created his first compressions, Cocteau frescoed Villa Santo Sospir. Famous names who brought modernity to the Côte d’Azur. All men ? Indeed not ! Women too played their part in that intellectual effervescence  : Françoise Sagan in Saint-Tropez, Simone Signoret in Saint-Paul-de-Vence... strong-charactered women with minds of their own. Women like Jeanne Augier, who would mark the Riviera in her individual way. That story began here on the Promenade des Anglais in 1957, when Madame Augier became the Negresco’s owner and with her husband, Paul, set about breathing new life into the sleepy luxury hotel. « Because I love all things beautiful and am a patriot, I wanted to take French hospitality to new heights here, « she later explained. Taking personal charge of her project, in those days a rare – if not unique – occurrence in the hotel industry, Madame Augier engaged her own team of artisans to renovate the hotel. Their goal ? Perfection. That anecdotal beginning would forge the destiny of a grande dame always adept at overriding the standards of the era, at being where she wasn’t expected, at shrugging off the yoke into which the « feminine condition « of her day would have liked to harness her. A free-thinking rebel spirit, as manifested by her drive to make the Negresco not just a place to stay but a maison dedicated to artistic creation, by developing it into a living museum. Niki de Saint Phalle’s callipygous Nana, the Negresco collection’s star turn, expresses perfectly that dual symbolism  : the passion for art and the forceful affirmation of a hallowed femininity. As a business leader Madame Augier defended the right of women to occupy the highest positions in the hotel industry. In 1997 she appointed Nicole Spitz the first ever general manager of a luxury hotel and backed Marie-Christiane Grün’s candidature for the post of head Clefs d’Or concierge, a position she holds today, again a first in France. Modernity means embracing current trends too. OPPOSITE  : THE SMALLEST DETAILS – E.G. THE CAR VALETS’UNMISTAKEABLE COSTUME – BEAR JEANNE AUGIER’S HALLMARK.. JEAN-MICHEL SORDELLO N A N A S D.R. 1 5
