C’est un petit tableau peint sur une planchette de bois par un inconnu, qui va révolutionner la peinture moderne. En 1888, Paul Sérusier, âgé de 23 ans, rencontre à Pont-Aven Paul Gauguin, son modèle. Le chef de file de l’impressionnisme lui conseille de faire évoluer son regard naturaliste, habitué à reproduire la réalité, pour un art plus intuitif, représentant ce que l’artiste perçoit et ressent vraiment. Sérusier produit alors Le Talisman, le paysage d’un bois à la perspective non académique et aux blocs de couleurs franches. Le synthétisme est né, privilégiant la perception à la reproduction, sans se soucier d’exactitude, et exerce une forte influence sur le courant des nabis et le postimpressionnisme. Cette exposition raconte l’histoire de ce coup de maître et son impact sur l’art moderne, avec 80 œuvres, de Gauguin à Émile Bernard ou Maurice Denis. Un rappel des faits passionnant. O u DE L’ART ! In 1888, in Pont-Aven, Brittany, 23-year-old Paul Sérusier met Paul Gauguin, who urged the young artist to transformhis naturalistic representations into a more intuitive art to better express what he truly felt and perceived. Shortly after, Sérusier painted The Talisman, a forest landscape with an almost naive perspective painted in blocks of bold color. This was the birth of Synthetism, a movement to favoring perception over representation and having little concern for precision, which quickly exerted a strong influence on the Nabis and Post-Impressionists.
