Chef de l’atelier de jardinage du parc André- Citroën, Xavier Legendre sort de la prestigieuse école d’horticulture de la mairie de Paris (l’École Du Breuil), comme Vincent Lysiak. Depuis trois ans, il s’acharne à redonner vie et beauté aux végétaux d’Australie et de Nouvelle-Zélande qui s’épanouissent sous l’une des serres monumentales. Pour tous ces passionnés, la mise en valeur des collections, et parfois leur survie, est un combat quotidien. Si les jardiniers effectuent l’essentiel de l’entretien et du replantage grâce aux serres de culture, « l’élagage des grands arbres est confié à des cordistes, qui descendent des structures en rappel », explique Xavier Riffet. Deux géants sont d’ailleurs en sursis : le palmier des Bermudes de la serre tropicale du Jardin des Plantes et le palmier des Canaries du palmarium d’Auteuil. L’un et l’autre frôlent déjà le plafond de verre. All of these professionals are united in the daily endeavor to advance and ensure the survival of their respective collections. While gardeners do most of the maintenance and replanting, « The pruning of large trees is entrusted to rope-access technicians, » explains Riffet. Two giant trees are actually in limbo : the Bermuda palm at the Jardin des Plantes’tropical greenhouse and the Canaries palm at the Auteuil palmarium, which are both grazing the glass ceiling.
