Omega the moon-walker
En décembre 1972, l’astronaute américain Eugene Cernan posait le pied sur la lune, une Omega Speedmaster au poignet. Quarante ans plus tard, l’horloger suisse lui rend hommage. -/ In December 1972, the American astronaut Eugene Cernan walked on the moon, an Omega Speedmaster on his wrist. Forty years later the Swiss watchmaker pays him a tribute.

Une empreinte historique
Homologué par la Nasa en 1965, pour toutes les missions spatiales habitées, le chronographe Omega Speedmaster est entré dans l’histoire. Si la montre a participé aux premiers pas sur la Lune, elle était également au poignet du capitaine Eugene Cernan, dernier homme à avoir laissé son empreinte sur l’astre, lors de la mission Apollo XVII. Et l’astronaute précise : « La Speedmaster est la seule chose que nous avons emportée sur la Lune qui n’avait subi aucune modification. Elle sortait directement du magasin. »

La Speedmaster Moonwatch « Apollo XVII »
Véritable hommage, produit en édition limitée à 1 972 pièces, ce garde-temps unique possède un cadran en argent, patiné à la main et estampé de l’insigne d’Apollo XVII. Alliance entre esthétique et prouessetechnique, le chronographe à remontage manuel renferme le calibre 1861 d’Omega, le même mouvement que celui de la légendaire Moonwatch. Autre clin d’œil à l’aventure spatiale, les inscriptions « Le dernier homme sur la lune », « 14 décembre 1972 », « Apollo XVII » et « 40e anniversaire » sont gravées sur le fond du boîtier.

-/ Making history The Omega Speedmaster chronograph went down in history when in 1965 it qualified for all NASA’s manned space missions. It was worn by the first man to step onto the moon, and also the last oneto leave his footprints there : Captain Eugene Cernan during the Apollo 17 mission. And as the astronaut points out : “The Speedmaster was the only thing wetook to the moon that hadn’t been modified in any way. It came straight out of the store.”

The Speedmaster Apollo XVII A truly accomplished tribute both aesthetically and technically, this uniquetimepiece in a limited edition of 1972 watches is a hand-wound chronograph driven by Omega’s 1861 calibre, the legendary Moonwatch movement. It has a handpatinated silver dial embossed with the Apollo 17 patch and further emphasises its space pedigreethrough the inscriptions “The last man on the moon”, “December 14, 1972”, “Apollo XVII” and “40th anniversary” engraved on the caseback.
