-/ William Klein in fashion Whilethe Grand Palais in Paris is presently honouring Helmut Newton’s career, the Soardi gallery in Nice is spotlighting the celebrated fashion photography of William Klein, an important 20th-century artist. Klein grew up in New York and first trained as a painter under Fernand Léger. As a young man, in the 50s he worked as a Vogue photographer along with Richard Avedon. At thetimethe magazine’s artistic director was Alexander Liberman, who was so impressed by Klein’s work that he offered to financethe photographer’s personal projects. Klein explored New York taking photographs he published as a “photo essay”, which brought him fame. The Nice exhibition In & Out of Fashion presents a score of this versatile artist’s photos until 30 June.

Tandis que le Grand Palais honore actuellement le parcours d’Helmut Newton, l’espace Soardi s’intéresse aux célèbres clichés de mode réalisés par William Klein, un des artistes les plus importants du XXe siècle. Dans les années 50, le jeune homme, qui a grandi à New York, est, avec Richard Avedon, le photographe attitré de Vogue. Son directeur artistique de l’époque, Alexander Liberman, impressionné par letravail de celui qui apprit la peinture auprès de Fernand Léger, lui propose de financer ses projets personnels. William Klein sillonne New York et en tire un « journal photographique » qui va faire sa notoriété. À Nice, dans l’exposition « In & Out of Fashion », une vingtaine de photos de l’artiste multidisciplinaire sont présentées jusqu’au 30 juin.
