No one knows more about the diva than Alexandra Boucherifi, author of The Secret Book on Lady Gaga that completesthetwo exhibitions the journalist has organised. Her book sets out to demonstratethe star’s extensive culture, including the influences of Salvador Dalí, Francis Bacon, Leigh Bowery and the French artist Orlan. “She sees her life as a work of art in which she brings music, fashion, stage performance and art together. Everything is of a piece, in her mind and in her behaviour. On the street, in the media, in videos, in concerts, Lady Gaga makes no concessions ; she never goes out in a track suit, she doesn’t buy into the extended family of jeans-clad stars,” Boucherifi writes. A closer investigation into Gaga’s often controversial outfits teaches us that provocation isn’t the only driving force ; her flesh dress, for example, was a take on an artwork by Jana Sterbak.
