SPECIAL IN & OUT 74 « Cela fait 40 ans que nous habitons notre maison de famille et depuis très longtemps nous avions le désir de la moderniser » introduit la propriétaire des lieux qui se surprend parfois à ne plus reconnaître l’espace dans lequel elle a pour tant toujours vécu. « C’est la r encontre avec Maurice Sauzet, dont je connaissais bien le travail, qui a tout déclenché. Nous lui avons alors r emis les clefs, et notre confiance, le temps - un an - à ses mains expertes de gommer les imperfections, de tout ouvrir sur le jardin, et de donner à notre lieu de vie la touche contemporaine qui lui manquait. Et dont nous rêvions forcément. » LIBÉRER L’ESPACE, VIVRE LE JARDIN Il faut dire que cette maison agricole n’échappait pas à la règle très compliquée des habitations de village : tr op d’escaliers, de petites ouver tures, des couloirs encombrants, un jar din inexploité... Résultat, aujourd’hui, l’escalier qui se trouvait au milieu a été déplacé sur l’extrême gauche de la maison, desservant ainsi les deux étages. Une des idées de ce projet était de proposer une déambulation intérieure sur les 400 m² habitables auxquels s’ajoutent 500 m² de jardin. Un parcours fluide, ouvert et en même temps protégé, pour mieux préserver la découverte. « Comme des scènes de cinéma qui s’enchaînent avec leurs couleurs et leur climat, leurs zones d’ombres et de lumières. Et une idée maîtresse, l’idéalisation du jardin, qui est d’ailleurs au centre de toutes mes recherches » confie Maurice Sauzet, fortement marqué par ses expériences au Japon, notamment aux côtés de Junzo Sakakura. avril 2010 www.cotemagazine.com "This has been our family home for 40 years and we'd been wanting to modernise it for a very long time," begins the owner, who sometimes realises with surprise that she no longer recognises the house in which she has always lived ! "It was meeting Maurice Sauzet, whose work I knew well, that set the wheels tur ning. He was able to smooth out the imper fections, open the whole p lace out onto the garden and give our living space the modern touch it lacked and that we were indeed dreaming of." FREE UP SPACE, MAKE THE GARDEN LIVEABLE The old agricultural cottage had the usual disadvantages of all village houses : too many stairs, small windows and doors, awkward corridors, an unexploited garden. To start with, the staircase right in the middle was moved to the far left of the house so as to serve bothupper floors. One of the ideas behind the project was to interconnect the 400m² of living space inside, plus the 500m² of garden, so as to make the rooms flow into one another, opening themup but at the same time preserving an element of discovery. "Like scenes in a film, their colours and atmospheres, areas of light and shade, successively blending into each other. And a key idea was the idealisation of the garden, something that is in fact at the heart of all my research," confides Maurice Sauzet, who is str ongly influenced by his experiences in Japan, notably with Junzo Sakakura.
