Hors compétition, on retrouvera aussi des grands noms, dont les films sont très attendus : Agora, le dernier opus d’AlejandroAmenabar, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus de Terry Gilliam, et L’Armée du crime de Robert Guédiguian. Comme chaque année, sont programmées des séances de minuit et des séances spéciales, avec notamment en avant-première Drag me to Hell de l’Américain Sam Raini, Ne te retourne pas de Marina de Van ou encore Min Ye du mythique Souleymane Cisse. Dix-neuf films sont par ailleurs programmés dans la section Un certain regard… Là encore, la part belle est donnée à la création avec des auteurs à la personnalité forte comme le Français Alain Cavalier (Irène), le Russe Pavel Lounguine (Tzar), le Japonais Hirokazu Kore-Eda (Kuki Ningyo) ou le Coréen Bong Joon Ho (Mother). Au total, les organisateurs ont visionné 1 670 longsmétrages (1792 en 2008) venus de 120 pays. 53 ont été sélectionnés. Avec une constante : les grands noms. Et un absent de taille : les Etats-Unis. Un seul film en compétition. Ce qui ne manquera pas de ranimer les critiques de ceux qui trouvent Cannes trop « auteuriste » et se désolent de ne pas y voir suffisamment de productions américaines. Éternelle polémique, qui fait partie de l’histoire de Cannes. Dont il faudra, cependant, se féliciter de l’universalité intacte et, aussi, du flair. Le Festival a toujours été un fantastique reflet du cinéma en train de se faire. Il n’a jamais manqué une tendance… L’avenir dira s’il a conservé ce talent rare et précieux. Satisfaction hexagonale : la France est bien présente, gonflée à bloc par le succès de Laurent Cantet, Palme d’or 2008 avec Entre les murs, et les acteurs français s’exportent plutôt bien : Johnny s’en va à Honk Kong, Laetitia mai 2009 www.cotemagazine.com STEVE BRAUN W.LAXTON Casta a séduit un réalisateur taïwanais d’avantgarde, et Charlotte Gainsbourg le pape du cinéma contestataire scandinave. Cocorico, donc ! Espérons que cette percée se concrétisera au moment du palmarès. Quant aux Américains, on peut toujours se consoler en se souvenant que le Festival a d’ores et déjà attribué une Palme d’Or Spéciale à Clint Eastwood, en février dernier, pour l’ensemble de son œuvre. Un choix plutôt judicieux si l’on en juge par Gran Torino, le dernier film jubilatoire signé par le maître. Et puis l’ex-Président Bill Clinton et l’inoxydable Sharon Stone sont annoncés au traditionnel dîner de l’Amfar, la fondation américaine contre le Sida, qui est prévu le 21 mai à l’hôtel Eden Roc. Alors… Temps de crise… Côté festivités et decorum, on nous annonce un festival de crise. Moins de paillettes, des fêtes en berne, des budgets rognés… La fréquentation (35 000 professionnels, 4 000 journalistes, en vitesse de croisière) est annoncée en légère baisse… Mais pas les films. Ils sont toujours plus nombreux… Et le public n’a pas déserté les salles de cinéma, loin s’en faut. La crise les pousserait même, selon certaines études, vers la culture… Comme quoi, l’art et le 7 e, en particulier, a conservé le pouvoir de nous faire rêver… Et ainsi, de nous donner plus de force pour vivre, tout simplement. An ongoing polemic that's just part of the history of a Festival whose intact universality and indeed flair we should nevertheless laud. This Festival has always been a fabulous reflection of cinema in the making and it's never missed a trend. Only the future will tell if it's conserved that rare and precious gift. France is happy ; it's well represented and still puffing out its chest at Laurent Cantet's 2008 Golden Palm for The Class, while French actors are successfully exporting themselves too : Johnny going to Honk Kong, Laetitia Casta seducing an avant-garde Taiwanese director and Charlotte Gainsbourg the high priest of Scandinavian anti-establishment cinema. So cock-a-doodle-do ! Let's hope this will be reflected in the list of winners. Regarding the Americans, we can always console ourselves by remembering that the Festival has already awarded Clint Eastwood a Special Golden Palm, last February, for his life work. A judicious decision judging by Gran Torino, the master's latest superb film. And then ex-president Bill Clinton and the enduring Sharon Stone are expected to attend the traditional de Tarantino, avec « Inglourious Basterds » dinner in aid of the US Aids charity Amfar being held on 21 May Brad Pitt. at the Eden Roc hotel.
