PAR MIREILLE SARTORET « Qui es-tu Peter ? », la question qui sous-tend la treizième exposition de l’Espace culturel Louis Vuitton « invite à parcourir une contrée fantastique où enfance et création dialoguent, s’inspirent, se galvanisent », expliquent Joanna Chevalier et Hervé Mikaeloff. Les deux commissaires ont ainsi demandé à treize artistes contemporains internationaux de relire Peter Pan, le célèbre conte populaire né en 1904 sous la plume de l’Ecossais James Matthew Barrie et d’explorer chacun à leur manière « un aspect du mythe, esquissant ensemble le profil du trublion. » Dans ce roman fantastique et merveilleux, Peter Pan est un petit garçon qui refuse de grandir suite au décès de sa maman… Il rejette le monde des adultes et décide de se réfugier dans un monde parallèle, le Pays de l’Imaginaire. « Il habite l’enfance comme on habite l’utopie : sans se soucier de l’impossible, des limites ou du destin. Son imagination est sa plus fidèle alliée pour nourrir le flot intarissable d’aventures dont il est toujours le héros. » Cela ne vous rappelle rien ? Les artistes, bien sûr. « L’imagination et la création naissent dans l’enfance, expliquent les deux organisateurs. Le syndrome de Peter Pan caractériserait les personnes fuyant les responsabilités de leur vie d’adulte. Mais sa caractéristique ne serait-elle pas plutôt la création d’univers inédits ? Et si Peter Pan représentait la dimension créative en chacun de nous ? » Les treize créateurs invités (1) nous entraînent dans leur propre Neverland, leur Pays de Nulle Part, constituée d’« une matrice de sensations » jalonnant entre plénitude et terreur ! Ils ne s’étaient pas consultés au préalable, chacune de leur scénographie dialogue l’une avec l’autre dans la plus incroyable des harmonies. The question underlying Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton's 13th exhibition "invites us to wander through a fantastic country where childhood and creativity dialogue, inspire each other, galvanise each other," Joanna Chevalier and Hervé Mikaeloff explain. The two curators asked 13 international contemporary artists to reread Peter Pan, the famous tale born in 1904 by the pen of Scotsman James Matthew Barrie, and each explore in their own way "one aspect of the myth, so as to together sketch a portrait of the lad". In this marvellous fairy story, Peter Pan is a young boy who refuses to growup after his mother dies. He rejects the adult world and escapes to a parallel world, Never Never Land. "He inhabits childhood as one inhabits utopia: with no concern for the impossible, limits or fate. His imagination is his most loyal ally in feeding the never-ending succession of adventures in which he is always the hero." Does that remind you of someone ? Artists, of course ! "Imagination and creativity are born in childhood," the two organisers explain. "The Peter Pan syndrome describes people who flee the responsibilities of their adult lives. But mightn't its main characteristic be rather the creation of original worlds ? What if Peter Pan represented the creative aspect of each of us ? " The 13 guest artists (1) lead us into their own Neverland composed of "a matrix of sensations" veering between plenitude and terror ! Although they didn't consult together, their creations all dialogue with each other in the most incredible of harmonies.
