MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL Nous avons tous un souvenir particulier lié au Festival de Montreux. J’ai eu l’immense privilège de suivre pendant plusieurs années le grand Miles Davis en tournée (grâce à Simone et Jean-Noël Ginibre), fin nonante ! Ces souvenirs resteront à jamais gravés dans ma mémoire. Mais le fait de le voir jouer à Montreux reste unique. Il était chez lui. Il était chez Claude Nobs... Si le plus grand festival du monde est sur les bords du Léman depuis 1967, ce n’est pas par hasard, c’est grâce à l’Office de Tourisme de Montreux ! Né en 1936, le jeune Claude fut d’abord cuisinier (meilleur apprenti de Suisse, s’il vous plaît !) avant d’être comptable à l’Office de Tourisme. Il en profite pour voyager en Europe afin de promouvoir sa région. Un voyage à New York va changer sa vie. Il en profite pour se rendre au siège d’Atlantic Records pour rencontrer un des directeurs, comme ça, au culot. En sortant du bureau, il croise Roberta Flack et lui propose, direct, de venir jouer à Montreux ! Bien vu: elle viendra et les autres artistes suivront. La ville de Montreux est désormais connue dans le monde entier ! La 1ère édition du festival dure 3 jours, l’été 1967, avec Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee et Jack DeJohnette. L’humour, l’enthousiasme et la fraîcheur de Claude Nobs font faire le reste. Il fait venir les artistes qu’il aime... et vous savez quoi ? Ils reviennent ! Claude Nobs devient même en 1973 le représentant de WEA l’Europe puis directeur de Warner Music Suisse. Des scènes de l’Auditorium Stravinski au Miles Davis Hall, tous les styles de musique sont représentés ; tous les plus grands artistes ont défilés, de Miles Davis à Ray Charles, de David Bowie à Prince, même si le jazz constitue la « base » historique du Festival. Nobs est tout sauf Snob en matière musicale ! NoNOBStant le fait que Claude Nobs soit devenu Docteur « Honoris Causa » de l’EPFL, il a toujours fait appel à de grands artistes contemporains pour illustrer ses affiches comme K. Haring, A. Warhol, F. Boisrond, N. De St- Phalle, J. Opie ou R. Combas. Au fait, le logo du festival date de 1982 et a été créé par... Tinguely. « Ça l’affiche » bien non ? Croyez-moi, le Montreux Jazz Festival n’a pas fini de faire du bruit ! ÇA VA JAZZER. -/MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL. WELL PLAYED. We all have a particular memory of the Montreux Festival. For several years I had the immense privilege of following the great Miles Davis on tour (thanks to Simone and Jean-Noël Ginibre), at the end of 1990. These memories will remain engraved in my memory for ever. But seeing Davis play Montreux was unforgettable. He was truly at home. He was chez Claude Nobs... If the biggest festival in the world has been held on the banks of Lake Geneva since 1967, it is not down to chance, it is thanks to the Montreux tourist office ! Born in 1936, the young Claude was originally a chef (namedthe best apprentice in Switzerland, thanks very much) before working as an accountant in the tourist office. He made the most of this position, travelling across Europe and promoting his home region. A journey to New York changed his life. He took advantage of being in the city to visit the offices of Atlantic Records and meet with one of the directors - just like that - with buckets of confidence. He bumped into Roberta Flack on his way out and suggested that she come and play, Montreux ! That was well played - she did come, and other artists followed. The city of Montreux became known all over the world. The 1st edition of the festival lasted for three days during the summer of 1967, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. The good humour, enthusiasm and refreshingly relaxed attitude of Claude Nobs did the rest. He only invited artists that he loved, and guess what ? They kept coming back ! In 1973 Claude Nobs even became the representative of WEA Europe and then manager of Warner Music Switzerland. From the stages in the Stravinsky Auditorium to the Miles Davis Hall, every musical style is represented ; every big artist has played here, from Miles Davis to Ray Charles, David Bowie to Prince. Even if jazz is historically the foundation of the Festival, Nobs is everything except snobbish when it comes to musical matters ! Although Claude Nobs became an ‘Honorary’Doctor of the EPFL (the prestigious Lausanne institute), he always appealed to key contemporary artists to illustrate the Festival posters, like K. Haring, A. Warhol, F. Boisrond, N. de St-Phalle, J. Opie and R. Combas. In fact, the Festival logo dates back to 1982 and was created by... Tinguely.
