34 I cÔte d’azur deluxe I inside The Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat An Oasis in the heart of the Côte d’Azur Nestling in the heart of Cap Ferrat, the Grand Hôtel du Cap is one of the world’s most prestigious addresses, and has preserved its charmthrough the course of a long and celebrated history. Situated on the tip of the Cap Ferrat Peninsula this imposing building of immaculate white stands proudly and half submerged by the verdure of its 7 hectare grounds. There are few other hotels anywhere that can look back as this one does, on one hundred years of success. An extraordinarily long history, enriched by the century that gave this hotel its soul. PicaSSo, Modigliani, Chagall … entered these doors as familiar guests. The luxuriant green of the gardens and the dominating azure of the Mediterranean skies produce the brightest contrasts sublimated by a legendary light. This is what established the celebrity of the French Riviera and attracted the greatest artists of the twentieth century. It is certainly no accident that the regular hotel guests included famous names such as Picasso, Modigliani, Rodin, Chagall, Matisse or Cocteau. This hotel is a haven of peace where the sea breeze charms all lovers of exquisite beauty, the finest pleasures of the table, the sun and the infinite blue of the sky. The elegance of a rare and exclusive refuge like a hidden fragment of paradise. A palace which has continued to offer its guest service at the cutting edge of innovation in this so luxurious setting over many decades. An unchanging philosophy : continuous improvement of the provision for guests, the introduction of advanced technology and all the contemporary provisions the modern traveller expects without the least loss to the character and identity of this superb traditional hotel. History, identity and modernity Guests walk directly into a uniquely original rotunda designed by Gustave Eiffel in 1909 on their first step into the foyer. They have an incomparable view of the Mediterranean from here. Listed as one of the « finest hotels in the world » by Forbes Traveller, and as the number one for service quality by Travel Leisure, the Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat has recently completed major renovation and extension work. It has 73 rooms including 24 suites plus a 750 m² spa area. This facility comprises an indoor pool, six outstandingly well equipped treatment rooms, a private balneotherapy bathing area, a fitness room, plus a wide range of therapies and treatments for the body and face. The opening of the new wing « La Résidence » on the side facing the sea has opened a new era for the hotel with the creation ofeight suites, each with its own private pool and 30 m² terrace offering superb sea views ; in addition there are sixteen « de luxe » rooms also looking out on the waves. Each of these has been individually decorated by the internationally celebrated interior architect Pierre Yves Rochon. Numerous rooms in the historic building have been fully renovated and developed. They have undergone a transformation into generously dimensioned spacious suites with every contemporary comfort and filled with light and are ideally suited to receiving guests who plan a long stay. At a discreet distance from the main building the Villa Rose-Pierre can be found tucked away in the hotel park at the centre of a one hectare pine grove and surrounded by an aromatic Mediterranean garden. Out of sight from away from prying eyes, this sumptuous 550 m² building, with its magnificent terraces has its own private pool and tennis court. The hotel pool is famous not least as a result of the reputation of Pierre
Foto : Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat Gruneberg, the swimming instructor of Ralph Lauren, Robin Williams, Tina Turner, and the children of Charlie Chaplin or Paul McCartney. This man who is known around the world for his « salad bowl method », has been here for sixty years and the principle of his teaching method consists of relaxing his pupils and curing their fear of breathing when under water. The secret ? Learning to master ones fears and ones breathing through the simple use of a salad bowl filled with water. Among those who do not attend swimming courses, some visiting artists follow in the footsteps of Picasso and use this opportunity to sketch Pierre Gruneberg. Some of these sketches are still preserved today with the greatest care in the Golden Book of the Grand Hôtel. Hotels that can pride themselves on anecdotes of this kind are rare indeed… the private Olympic pool has heated sea water and is accessed by a private cable lift, it dominates a cliff overlooking the sea. Constructed in 1929, it was totally innovative at the time and the original avant-garde pool basin is stillused today. It is listed as one of the « 3 best swimming pools in the world » by National Geographic. cap ferrat I 35 The gourmet paradise The Grand Hôtel du Cap is the delight of the world’s most fastidious gourmets with its three restaurants under the direction of Didier Anies, who was namedBest Craftsman of France in 2000, and whose establishments have been awarded innumerable stars. The chef provides exquisite cuisine, combining in an approach to food that combines simplicity with the elegant and uses the finest products on the market in recipes with a distinct flavour of Provence. An authentically Mediterranean cuisine comprising an extraordinary range of dishes is the mark of this hotel. The new Salon des Collections has a wine cellar which is without doubt one of the most spectacular in the world, admired in particular for its 141 bottles of Château d’Yquem (including all the vintage years going back to 1854) and its 33 bottles of Château Lafite Rothschild 1799. A single glance here is a remarkable journey through the past. The hotel has now reinstated the ritual of traditional afternoon tea, first introduced a century ago on the opening of the hotel. The tea card comprises among others a white tea from the Chinese Province of Anhui, Peach Oolong tea, EarlGrey and the indispensable English tea. All the tea is served as leaf tea accompanied by sandwiches, scones and other delicacies prepared with the greatest care. Tea is served at the rotunda close to the veranda, to ensure that no one need miss the delights of this elegant afternoon custom. The « palace » was originally conceived to fulfil the dreams of our guests and as an ode sung to the art of good living. The Grand Hôtel du Cap has been a brilliant successin creating an identity which is a marriage of the modern and the traditional. The essence of this institution floats like the waft of a harmonious perfume from the Belle Epoque ; it is a remembrance of things past and of a time when the Côte d’Azur was the rendezvous of the crowned heads of Europe.
