GAME CHANGERS THE DURABILIS WAY AS FAR AS RESPONSIBLE AGRO-VENTURES GO, DURABILIS IS RE-WRITING THE RULE-BOOKS IN WEST AFRICA TAKING SOCIAL responsibility to the next level while investing in developing world economies and advocating sustainable development is something Belgium-based impact-investing company Durabilis does not take for granted. Pay a visit to Durabilis’BaraJii drinks processing, marketing and distribution operations in Burkina Faso in West Africa, and the company’s focus on the environment and society is clearly evident. Its mission statement is « to provide healthy drinks for all », so they do not only produce drinks in PET bottles, but also in sachets not only helping to make the product more affordable to the larger population but also limiting the impact on the environment. The sachets are produced from oxo-biodegradable plastic to ensure complete biodegradability, while the juices and lemonades are sweetened with the natural sugar substitute Stevia to combat the high prevalence of diabetes. « We take pride in producing healthy drinks that are not only affordable to the Base of Pyramid (BOP) population, but also in how we achievethis. Our aim is to share our success and development with new partners and investors in order to attain high impact change in local communities and economies, » says BaraJii Group Business Unit Manager Peter Willaert. The company’s success speaks for itself. By manufacturing 125 million drink sachets and employing more than 600 people BaraJii today provides highquality, healthy and affordable drinks to over 2,000 shops and 50 wholesale outlets in Burkina Faso and beyond. Yet, the symbioses between producing a high value product in the most responsible way also creates positive spin-offs. Durabilis has invested in high-tech, innovative production methods like utilising solar energy. This in turn has put them into a position to be able to become active as solar energy providers and consultants to mid-sized companies across West Africa. This sumsup the Durabilis’philosophy : rather than pursuing short-termprofit, obtain value based on long-termcommitment, social impact synergies across all businesses and develop new agro-value chains linked to financial performance.
