Trois-Rivières courthouse blends old with new By Christopher Guly As an architecture student four decades ago, Pierre Morel, FIRAC was inspired by the forward-thinking found in the book, Design for Climate : Bioclimatic Approach to Architectural Regionalism. Published by Princeton University Pressin 1963, the book was prescient in providing insights into the effects of climate on orientation, air movement, sites and materials, and emphasized the importance of matching a building with its environment. Throughout his architectural career, 65-year-old Morel, a principal with the Quebec City firm, Côté Chabot Classic and Contemporary « The challenge was to conceive a design for a contemporary addition while respecting some of the important design elements of the old building. » Morel architectes – has used the book as a guide. One of the more recent results of that infl uence in blending a building into its surroundings is on display in the expansion and renovation of the historic Trois-Rivières Palais de justice that he and his son, Mathieu Morel, MIRAC, helped design.
