Aitutaki The Cook Islands’blue diamond 52 aitutaki has an unusual geography : it is « almost an atoll » consisting of a main island and a string of motu. it still has volcanic bedrock, risingup to 120 m (394 ft), from where visitors can admire an exceptional 360-degree view of the lagoon. There are also pleasant trails around the island that can be done on bike or on foot passing from one village to another through plantations and coconut groves, admiring a lagoon with its thousand and one shades of blue, making it a quintessential farflung tropical island. an excellent way to discover this gem of an island is on a boat trip, where you can appreciate the beauty of the marine life and the deserted motu. one of the loveliest islets, one Foot island, got its name from a legend that has been passed down from generation to generation in different versions. The legend of One Foot Island a long time ago, a Māori chief from aitutaki decided to create a marine reserve to protect the lagoon resources. nobody could fish in this area : whoever dared to disobey the order would be sentenced to death. But, seeing his family starve, a poor fisherman, decided to paddle to the reserve with his son. on the way, they were spotted by lookouts posted at the top of the main island. on the order of the outraged chief, the warriors set off in pursuit of the intruders. realizing that his son faced a death sentence, the fisherman told him to quickly paddle to Tapuaetai motu. once there he told him to walk to the center of the islet, the father followed carefully behind walking in son’s footprints, then ordered him to hide in a tree until sunset, then left. When they warriors reached the motu, they saw only one pair of footprints, and went in search of the culprit. at sunset, the son came out of his hiding place to find his father dead, he understood then that he had saved his life.
