44 Moods Embracing the Earth TEXT Livia Firth I was forever inspired by environmentalist Vandana Shiva, who rightly pointed out in our documentary The True Cost that the frst economy on which our lives rest is nature’s economy. When we fnally recognize that nature has an economy and we start counting it—then we will change the world. We also have people’s economy : women working, laborers working, farmers growing, miners digging and so on. And all of this has been made invisible by the number called the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), which measures only that which is traded. This is why I love working with the luxury jewelry company Chopard : they realized a few years ago that they need to account for the people in their supply chain and the way the gold is mined. So they started supporting the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and source most of their gold in a fairmined way. Other inspirational businesses, such as Kering and Marks & Spencer, are also working in this way, respecting our world. Businesses should look at these examples so we can view the land not as a commodity, to be speculated on and traded, but as the very basis of our life, as Mother Earth. Only then will our businesses grow in a sustainable way. |
