AIR FRANCE, CHAMPION FLYER AIR FRANCE KLM transports 70 million passengers annually. But Air France’s track record goes way back, with some extraordinary achievements. A320, 2007 et A380, 2009. A380, 2007 and A380, 2009. In Olympic history, the flame had never traveled so quickly ! On December 14, 1991, just a few days before the opening ceremonies at Albertville in France, an Air France Concorde made the trip from Athens to Paris in 55 minutes, flying 1,342mph (2,160 kph). The flame was housed in a closed container, with a special fuel developed by Air France to prevent accidents. Mission accomplished : the Olympic flame then continued its route to the Alps. A fleet of jumbos — Put into service by Air France in 1970, the Boeing 747 long remained the largest jumbo jet ever flown. It can carryup to 391 passengers, many more than earlier aircraft (92 passengers for the Lockheed Super Constellation in the 1950s). But it was surpassed by the A380, which seatsup to 538 passengers (in the version configured for Air France). More than 40 years after it started flying, the B747 is still hard at work. Other aircraft have worked many long years (25 for the B727 and the A300, 23 for the Douglas DC-3). But the 747 still holds the record : 9 B747-400 are still in the fleet. Faster than sound — No passenger on any airline ever flew faster than on a Concorde. From 1976 to 2003, the supersonic plane built by Sud Aviation flew at Mach 2.23 (2,405 kph)—twice the speed of sound ! In four hours, it could fly the same distance it took a subsonic aircraft to travel in nearlyeight. When it was part of the Air France fleet, it did not exceed the maximum authorized speed, Mach 2.02 (2,179 kph), the equivalent of 36 km per minute. The time it took you to read this text, it would already have flown 20 km ! The highest — Today, most Air France flights climbto an altitude of 10,700 meters. The goal is to climbas high as possible, where the air is thinner : the aircraft encounters less resistance and flies faster, using less fuel. It would be possible to climbeven higher, but the aircraft has to withstand extremely low outside temperatures. The Concorde, for example, flew at 18,288 meters as it crossed the South Atlantic. The outside temperature was between -73° and -82°C. At speeds of Mach 2, despite the cold outside, the temperature of the aircraft’s skin was +127°C, which stretched the length of the Concorde by about 23 cm. New York–Paris — It was Christmas night in 1989. The Air France Concorde from New York’s JFK to Paris had only 30 passengers, a light load. Early on, the aircraft was boosted by a strong tailwind. As it neared Europe, the flight captain decided to change course and fly over Dieppe, which made for a longer route, but cut 2 minutes off the flight time. Runway 09 was available at the Paris- Charles-de-Gaulle airport, slicing off a few more seconds. Concorde 001 touched down after 2 hours, 59 minutes and 40 seconds, 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Over 60 years earlier, on May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh had made the first nonstop flight from New York to Paris in 33 hours and 30 minutes ! Around the world — His name was DonaldL. Pevsner. He was a wealthy American lawyer, totally enamored of the Concorde. As early as 1992, he had chartered the plane to beat the around-the-world flight record—in celebration of the 500 years since the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. On August 17, 1995, he was able to convince a major American brewery to challenge the record, as part of an advertising contest. After a 36,784-km flight, with stops in Toulouse, Dubai, Bangkok, Guam, Honolulu and Acapulco, the Concorde AF1995 landed in New York, 31 hours, 27 minutes and 49 seconds after taking off from the same airport—thereby shattering the record. The passengers saw two sunrises and two sunsets during their trip. The favorite aircraft — Air France has flown a large number of different aircraft, some 150 in all. The most commonly used plane is still in operation : the Airbus A320, a medium-haul craft with 170 seats. The airline has purchased 105 since 1988. The Air France fleet currently has 61, as the others have already been taken out of service. Each era has its favorite aircraft : the Dewoitine D-338 in the 1930s (30 or so in use), the DC-3 in the 1950s (40), the Caravelle in the 1960s (40) and the Boeing 727 and Boeing 747 in the 1970s (30 aircraft each). | SYLVAIN CAMBON, PHILIPPE DELAFOSSE/AIR FRANCE - COLLECTION MUSÉE AIR FRANCE/DR
More records Longest unpowered glide-flight On April 16, 1959, the Caravelle Alsace glided 265 km from Paris to Dijon with 35 people aboard. After takeoff, the pilot climbed straightup to 11,700 meters and cut the engines to idle ; the aircraft glided all the way to Dijon. The longest nonstop flight With a flight range of 14,500 km, the B777 can fly nonstop from Paris to Santiago, nearly 12,000 km, in 14 hours and 10 minutes. In the 1930s, the Aéropostale pilots flew the same route (from Toulouse) in 109 hours, with nine stopovers. Busiest day On June 29, 2007, two days after the opening of its new boarding satellite at Paris-CDG airport, Air France transported a record number of passengers : 180,858, virtually the same number as for the entire year of 1946. Most flights On September 14, 2007, a total of 1,774 Air France flights crisscrossed our skies, an absolute record ! k Caravelle, années 1960. Caravelle, 1960s.
